Lecture

17-4-2020 / Week 1 Introduction

Mr Vinod had shared a video of him introducing Typography to us, how do we set up the blogspot and also a small brief on the exercises on the first day of the online class.

24-4-2020 / Week 2 Development

Mr Vinod had introduced us to the History and timeline of the Typography but from the view of the western world. The lecture video only covers the western side of typography so we are encouraged to read a book or look up online for the remaining history of typography for the other side of the world. (Chinese calligraphy, Egyptians calligraphy etc...)

1-5-2020 / Week 3 Basic

In this lecture Mr Vinod had explained some of the basic of Typography, basics such as what are the correct terms to describe certain letter form, and also some of the basic terms of fonts/ type family.

8-5-2020 / week 4 Text_P1

In this lecture Mr Vinod explains more about text formatting. These are the following things that Mr Vinod had explain in this lecture.

  • Kerning and Letter spacing
  • Formatting Text (Flush left, Centered, Flush Right)
  • Text/ Texture
  • Leading and Line Length

15-5-2020 / week 5

Mr Vinod gave us a small brief of project 1 and then we had a consultation on our blog and Task 3 Word Formatting.

Task 1 Exercise - Type Expression

We had been given 6 different words:
  • LOUD
  • DROWN
  • PUSH
  • DISAPPEAR
  • FLY
  • HIDDEN

Our task is to create a typeface that can represent meaning of the words, we also need to show our process of working and work out the final outcome in the Adobe Illustrator and post it into our e-portfolio.

Task 2 Exercise - Word Animation

From 6 of the word expression we've done previously, we have to choose one of them and make a short animation gif of the word. The animation have to support the meaning of the word. For example, if the word is drown, the animation movement have to be about drowning as well.

Sketches

Fig 2

I started out by sketching how will the animation moves. The concept of this animation is the letter P pushes all the other letters off the edge. So the main thing I will focus on is the physics of objects falling, in this animation I tried to mimic the movement of the objects and make it as realistic as possible.

Progress

Fig 2.2

To make the animation process, it requires the platform of both adobe Illustrator and Photoshop , when I am doing the animation movement I've also used a ruler to help me keep track of the position and direction of the letters in the previous art board. For this animation I've made about 76 frames to mimic the movement of pushing and falling.

Task 3 Exercise - Word Formatting

To complete task 3 exercise word formatting, there are 3 different small task we have to do in order to complete the whole task.

  • Choose a typeface for your name that you think suits your personality
  • Design different layouts and text formatting into something like a business card
  • Write an essay about 150 - 200 words then work on the layouts and word formatting of the essay

Mini Task 1

Fig 3

I chose Futura Std Light because I like that the line looks very thin and it feels very clean and tidy to me.
When I'm working, I always prefer my working space to be simple, tidy and I try not to have too much stuff on the table.

REFLECTION

Experience

17/4/2020

Week 1= For week 1 we were introduced to the e-portfolio and also the introduction of Typography.

24/4/2020

Week 2= We had consultation for the Word expression Task and we also learned about how to do animation with the help of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

1/5/2020

Week 3= It was labour Day but it we had a small consultation on our word animation work.

8/5/2020

Week 4= I definitely need to work on my time management and try to make sure I work more faster and more efficiently.

15/5/2020

Week 5= I was very excited to show my work because I feel like it looks good and I was really curious what is the lecturer going to say. But it got rejected because I've forgotten to add the image and subtext, so I was really beating myself up the whole day for forgetting such simple things.

Observation

17/4/2020

Week 1= The way both lecturer teach is a bit fast pace so I have to write down notes and if I could not keep up I have to rewatch the lecture and also try to learn outside of the class to keep up. For example sometimes I would watch more things about typography in youtube to try to keep up with the class and also learn more at the same time.

24/4/2020

Week 2= I've learned that it is very important to pay attention to all the details, the details can be the layout of the text, the line, the measurement, balance. Every single small details are very important and it can really make a difference.

1/5/2020

Week 3= Mr Vinod suggested improvement and he said overall good job. That "overall good job" really makes me happy and I feel very motivated to do the next task.

8/5/2020

Week 4= Even though Mr Vinod explains things in a very detail way, but he was a bit fast pace for me so I have to try to follow faster and make sure I write notes down.

15/5/2020

Week 5= The blog is extremely important, make sure everything is up to date and also remember further reading.

Finding

17/4/2020

Week 1 = I never really understand what Typography is about and why is it important. So it was really surprising to me when I watched the Introduction of Typography video. After the video I became really interested and excited to learn more about Typography.

24/4/2020

Week 2 = One of a way to express a word is to mimic it's nature. For example if we were to express the word DROWN. We can express it by showing how it is moved and slightly turning at an angle when it is drowning in the water.

1/5/2020

Week 3 = It was Labour Day but I'm really happy that Mr Vinod still gave us a small consultation, it was really helpful.

8/5/2020

Week 4 = When Mr vinod is explaining how to format text it was a bit shocking to me. I didn't know that there are such things like kerning, formatting and leading. When I first think about typography I though it's all just fonts and nothing else. There are actually so many details that is involved when formatting text and I didn't know that.

15/5/2020

Week 5= I was so focus on working on the task I've forgotten to update everything in the blog. The blog is very important so I have to make sure I update it regularly.
